Frances Vulkovich did not play any organized softball or baseball prior to trying out for the AAGPBL. Despite her lack of formal experience, she managed to make the Chicago Colleens player development team in 1950. The following season, the AAGPBL gave her a contract to play in the "majors" with Racine. She was affectionately nicknamed "be bop" for her love of jazz music, and she hung up her cleats after the 1951 season and went to work for Illinois Bell in Chicago for a while. Later, she moved to California and worked for Pacific Bell until she retired in 1988. In her retirement years, she enjoyed golfing and player reunions.
