Milwaukee, Wisconsin was one of two sites Wrigley chose to add to the League in 1944. These larger cities were expected to draw large crowds due to the increased population base. That is not what occurred. Milwaukee was a sports city with a long history of professional mens baseball teams dating back to the 1800's. None of these team lasted for long, but in 1901, the city became home to the minor league Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association. The city loved their Brewers and the Chicks were in direct competition with them. Due to low attendance and lack of support from the city and the press, the team was unable to sustain itself in Milwaukee, dispite winning the League championship in 1944.
