Charlotte Smith batted and threw right-handed. Nicknamed "You-All" by her Racine teammates, it appears she played primarily second base with the Belles to start her career. Later in the 1943 season, she played more outfield and an occasional 3rd base. It appears she turned out to be a good utility player during the 1943 season. On June 9, 1943, the Racine Journal Times noted she had "the best success story of any girl in the league." This was because she was not selected in the initial tryout she had in Tennessee and obviously did not make it to the final tryout at Wrigley Field. However, she made the trip to Chicago anyway and walked into the office of Ken Sells, the first league president, and said "I'm good enough to play in this league and I want to play." In fact, she was more than good enough to play in the league and posted a superb .316 average with 12 walks and only 6 strikeouts in 149 at-bats in her first season. She also stole 54 bases to boot.
