Betty was an outfielder with great skill.
Betty Francis of Chicago passed away January 30, 2016 at South Suburban Hospital, Hazelcrest. Betty was born July 7, 1931 to Hattie & Roy Francis of Maquoketa, IA.
The Francis family moved to Chicago in 1945 where Betty played amateur softball with the Chicago Park District in Ogden Park. In 1949 Betty was selected for the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. Betty played in the AAGPBL for five seasons, four seasons with the Lassies of Kalamazoo, and ending her career with the South Bend Blue Sox. Betty was inducted into the permanent “Women in Baseball” exhibit in Cooperstown in 1988.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and siblings. A memorial will be held in Betty’s honor Saturday, February 27th at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Greenwood Community Church (3509 W 111th St Chicago, IL 60655). In lieu of flowers please send any memorials to the American Lung Association.
