Dorothy “Dot” Wind began playing fastpitch softball when she was 15 years old and briefly played for Emery Parichy's outstanding amateur softball team known as the Bloomer Girls in her hometown of Chicago. In her youth, she also performed well in volleyball and basketball before joining the All-American League. Dorothy played in the very first night game at Wrigley Field in 1943, which was an All-Star game between two teams of AAGPBL All-Stars. Moreover, she was a key member of the Racine Belles, the inaugural championship team of the AAGPBL.that season. After playing in the All-American League for two years, she returned home and played second base and shortstop for the Bluebirds and Bloomer Girls of the professional fastpitch softball National Girls Baseball League in Chicago from 1945 to 1952.
