Delores (Lee) Dries started playing baseball when she was four years old with neighborhood boys on the streets of Jersey City, New Jersey. During her early playing days, she acquired her nickname "Pickles" because some of the men could not remember her name. She began playing baseball competitively when she was 12 for a couple of teams. One was an all-men's team, Al Santora's Village Boys, the other being the Garfield Flashettes. While playing for the Flashettes, the manager, Slim Berger, father of AAGPBL player Joan Beger, noticed her talents and got her a tryout with the Rockford Peaches when she was 16 years old in 1952. After only playing in a handful of games in 1952, she went on to win Rookie of the Year honors in 1953. She played the final year of the AAGPBL in 1954 and later married.and had a son. For work, she became a police detective, retiring in 1978.
