Barbara Tetro - was one of six children (three daughters) of Glenn and Adeleide Tetro. An outdoor enthusiast in her youth, she enjoyed being in a hostel that took long biking and hiking expeditions across Michigan. After becoming one of the best fast-pitch softball pitchers in Western Michigan in her teens, she was recruited by and went to spring training for the All-American Girls Baseball League in Opa-locka, Florida in April of 1948. She was later assigned to be a pitcher for her hometown team, the Grand Rapids Chicks, in June of that year. League records that are available have her appearing in one game as a relief pitcher. After her brief stint in the AAGPBL, she continued to play in competitive fast-pitch softball amateur leagues in the Grand Rapids area for two or three years. In 1952, she married Bernard Atkinson. Unfortunately, the marriage only lasted a year.
