Julia Hardin was an aviation machinist mate third class for the Women Accepted for Volunteer Service (WAVES) and was serving overseas for nine months just prior to entering the All-American Girls Baseball League training camp as a rookie in April of 1946. During her stint in the Navy she was on two championship WAVES fastpitch softball teams. .
