N. J. Harkness, President of the Grand Rapids Chicks from 1945-1950, was a graduate of Northwestern University and a Captain in World War I. During the 1940s he served as President of Michigan Distributors, Inc., President of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Grand Rapids Veteran's Counseling Center.  He also served on the Board of Directors of the Kent County Family Service and was a member of the Peninsular Club, University Club, Kent Country Club, American Legion, Elks, Torch Club, and White Lake Yacht Club.
