Lorraine "Peggy" Torrison excelled in bike races, volleyball, and softball in her youth. Later, in her early 20s, she joined the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, but only stayed with her hometown Minneapolis Millerettes through the second road trip due to a combination of being homesick and a sore arm. A few years later, Torrison mentioned in an interview that softball was a "good experience," but was "too tough for an average girl." (This statement exemplifies the true toughness shown by many women softball and baseball players who continued to play on a professional and amateur level for several years or even decades;). Concerning Torrison's softball career, sources available lead us to believe that she generally gave up organized softball after 1945.
In her late teens and early 20s, Peggy became more interested in bowling and became nationally and to some degree internationally known for her talents in this sport. She competed several times in the 1940s and 1950s in the Women's International Bowling Congress sweepstakes competition. In her first try in 1947, she finished a career best second place at this tournament. During her bowling heyday, she was also the first assistant to Lenore Wallich, who created and managed the first bowling newspaper, The Minneapolis Bowling News. In the late 1940s she also became known regionally for her golf skills.
On a more personal level, Peggy was always close with and a caretaker for her brother, Ted, who was born with congenital scoliosis. Between her assistance, his sheer will, and the Lord above, Ted lived to be 64 years old, passing within two months after his beloved sister in January of 1978.
