Dorothy Chapman (former women's professional baseball player) will be honored after the Black River/Firelands Varsity softball game on May 5th. The Black River Softball Field will be dedicated in her honor and memory. 
Mrs. Chapman (b. November 21, 1918 d. August 2, 1981 maiden name McAlpin) was a catcher and outfielder that played from 1943 through 1949 in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. She was one of the sixty original members of this league. Born in LaGrange, Ohio, she was a long time Spencer Township resident with her six children who attended the Black River Schools. Mrs. Chapman is a character in the children's author Dan Gutman's book, Mickey and Me, and some of Mrs. Chapman's baseball and personal life was included in the movie "A League of Their Own" (1992).
