Zoss, Barney (3/12/1912 - 12/28/1995)

Barney Zoss, 83, longtime South Bend area baseball and softball umpire and a member of the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame since 1991, died December 28, 1995 at Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation Center. 

Mr. Zoss retired in 1979 from the South Bend Street Department.  He worked for Royal Rubber Co. from 1938 to 1966 and was also a salesman for Electrolux. 

He was born March 12, 1912 in South Bend, IN.  On Jan. 17, 1937, in South Bend, he married Minnie Franklin.  She preceded him in death.

He was survived by two daughters, eight grandchildren, a sister, and a sister-in-law. 

He was a member of Temple Beth-El, South Bend Eagles, and B’nai B’rith.  He received the Russ Oliver Award in 1991.  In 1993, Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium honored him by naming the umpires’ room the Barney Zoss Umpires Room.

Services were held at the Forrest G. Hay Funeral Home.  Burial was at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery.
