Griffin, Viola Thompson (1/2/1922 – 12/31/2017)

Viola GriffinViola Thompson Griffin, 95, widow of Claude Thomas Griffin, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017.

Born in Seneca, SC, she was the daughter of the late Henry J. and Mae Moore Thompson. Mrs. Griffin was a graduate of Anderson Girls High School and was a pitcher for the All American Girl's Professional Baseball League and participated in the movie "A League of Their Own". She and all the AAGPBL members were honored with an exhibit in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY in 2003. Mrs. Griffin was inducted into the S.C. Athletic Hall of Fame as well as proud to be inducted into the T.L. Hanna High School Athletic Hall of Fame. She also received the Order of the Palmetto Award from the State of SC. She was retired from Essex International and was a member of Belton First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands; four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; two brothers, and two sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Carlisle, Floyd, Harold, and James Thompson and two sisters, Fredda Acker and Ninetta Spearman.

Funeral services were held at at Sullivan-King Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. T. Dale Lynch. Entombment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family received friends prior to the service.
